Book Review : One came home

As Sherry and I giddily browsed the book shelves at Barnes and Noble with gift cards in hand, I picked up this book that is on the Lone Star list for 2014. After reading the teaser on the back I wasn’t entirely sure if it was a “Jessica book” or a “Sherry book”. For those of you who know us well, know that is highly unusual. We are experts at deciding which book is best for each other. It had historical references, which generally means Sherry, but there was a mystery and real life adventure which screams me. Since Sherry was already clutching three books and trying to decide which to read first, I went with it.

I suppose that is the nature of this age group, but it didn't feel natural to me. In fact, some of the plot twists seem contrived, where others seemed obvious. First of all, I am not sure what age group the book is for. The things that are of major concern in the book seem more like interests of teens, but the main character is what I would consider to be a tween.

Tips for Getting Kids Hooked on Books

Lucy Moon was pleasant and all, but when you left the book you didn't find her stuck in your head for long periods of time. She's the kind of gal who likes to make an impression, even if that means hanging around your grey matter. I don't regularly wrestle with the mad desire to read a book aloud but somewhere around page 83 I had to stifle an impromptu recitation on the #7 subway train. A reviewer for Common Sense Media hailed the protagonist's voice as “distinctive and likable”, but also warned that the “slow pace might deter some readers”.

He sleeps in his long underwear, and Georgie is very conscious of his body. When Georgie questions a group of men as to whether they’ve seen Agatha, one jokes that while his friend likes to look at girls like her, he has to pay them to keep his company. Georgie Burkhardt's family's general store is right on the path of these enthusiastic followers, and they plan to make the most of it. Both the store and Georgie are ready, stocking up on provisions possibly needed to catch falling birds in skillets or shoot straight into the almost-10-mile flock. What Georgie doesn't anticipate about the wild pigeons coming to their town is her older sister running off, possibly with some of the less-than-scrupulous pigeoners. Even though this book showed me some cool tricks and some cool ways to think outside the box, I wish the ending was more of an unforgettable feeling. Does it have what it takes to be a contender for the Newbery? There's been a lot of buzz, but it's still early in the year.

This mystery/coming-of-age story moves at a leisurely pace during Georgie and Billy's journey as Georgie's memories slowly reveal the motives of the characters. Although the slow pacing of One Came Home might deter some readers, it should be fine for those used to historical fiction. I especially loved the way that the author handled the differing worldviews of the people in 1871 and the modern world when it comes to the mass hunting of animals. Disconsolate over the end of a promising courtship, Agatha Burkhardt runs off without so much as a goodbye to her younger sister, Georgie. When the sheriff attempts to locate and retrieve Agatha, he brings home not the vibrant sister that Georgie adores, but an unidentifiable body wearing Agatha’s ball gown.

Georgie falls unconscious from exhaustion and wakes up in a hotel room. She is treated to a warm bath and new clothes, courtesy of Mr. Olmstead. He tells her that Billy also told him about the kiss, and he regrets not trusting Agatha. He also tells Georgie that the authorities are looking for Mr. Garrows and his accomplices.

And when the sheriff returns to town with an unidentifiable body - wearing Agatha's blue-green ball gown—everyone assumes the worst. Refusing to believe the facts that are laid down before her, Georgie sets out on a journey to find her sister. She will track every last clue and shred of evidence to bring Agatha home.

Georgie is upset when they come to the place her sister’s body was found. It is ordinary, with no sign that anything remarkable ever happened. She leaves the spot and races up a rocky hillside, hoping her sister may have left some kind of clue or note behind. When she finds nothing, Georgie screams in frustration. She loses her balance and slips down the hill, hitting her face on some rocks. They split up for a while, with Georgie buying a few supplies in the general store and showing Agatha’s photograph to people to see if anyone recognizes her.

This is a great read aloud for upper elementary and middle school students. The book would appeal to both boys and girls and students of all levels. I passed it along to my son who loves adventure and I can’t wait to talk with him about it. Pre-publication book reviews and features keeping readers and industry influencers in the know since 1933. The violence in the book is not graphic, although the state of the corpse in the beginning of the story is disturbing. The body had no face, only a clump of hair and no hands.

Georgie is a tomboy and there's plenty of action to keep boys interested. Though there's a bit of secondary romance but Georgie isn't interested in boys yet. She does admire Billy's figure as he strips down to his union suit but it's very innocent. The characters are very memorable, especially the hoydenish Georgie.

This book was quite emotional and had many twists and turns, right when I thought something was going to happen, the complete opposite does which is really interesting. One thing I didn't really like was how the ending was extremely predictable, but I still enjoyed it nonetheless. In all honesty, this book wasn't the most amazing book I've ever read, however it was extremely well written and I really enjoyed it. I'd recommend this book to anyone 13+, mostly because of the things talked about like death and violence. Timberlake does a great job with the inner landscape of the characters.
